Tint World SBA Loan Case Study
The Challenge
Dan Billings has lived a life that could easily be a Hollywood script—complete with corporate success, personal tragedy, and an inspiring comeback. With 40 years of experience in the business world, Dan has worn many hats, from sales to advertising, even serving as the president of a marketing agency. He’s a people person at heart, and as he puts it, “It may sound mushy, but I deeply care about people and the human race.”
Six years ago, Dan was living a good life in Fort Worth, Texas. He had a steady income as the general manager of a company run by a longtime friend, a great marriage to his wife Jennifer, and what looked like a bright future. But as life often goes, things took an unexpected and devastating turn.
In just a year and a half, Dan lost Jennifer—his wife of 37 years—to a rare form of cancer. As if that wasn’t enough, his friend and company owner revealed financial problems that led to the cancellation of their insurance premiums. Tragically, this friend ended up taking his own life. “In a very short period,” Dan confided, “I lost my wife, my friend, and my income.”
On top of it all, Dan was left with $1.1 million in uninsured medical bills, but only $900,000 in his 401(k). “I wound up making a deal with the insurance company to cover all the bills,” he explained, “but I had to give them my entire life savings.” At 60, Dan had to start over with no assets.
But here’s where the script takes a turn. Fast-forward a few years, and Dan is still standing. Always a self-described “car guy,” Dan set out to start his own business. Setting his sights on the automotive industry, he specifically wanted a business that “would make cars cool.” With the help of a business broker, he found the perfect fit with a Tint World franchise. Offering over 30 different services—from AV systems to car security—Tint World was the business Dan had been looking for. Dan was able to use his strong business background to prepare an initial business plan, financial projections and other materials needed for a loan. He also worked with a company recommended by Tint World to put together his business plan.
The Solution with First Bank of the Lake
Dan’s landlord agreed to provide $121,000 in tenant improvements and buildout for his new Tint World location—a move that impressed the bank and reduced the loan amount needed. For many SBA loan recipients, this type of landlord contribution can feel like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, but Dan pulled it off. Asking landlords for a tenant improvement allowance is an excellent way to manage start-up expenses, lowering the amount of money needed.
The entire process to close the loan was 6-8 months. The funds were put to good use—further leasehold improvements, working capital, equipment, furniture, marketing, you name it. And what made the journey easier? “My First Bank of the Lake rep, Jodie Bowman, was great. Easily the finest banker I’ve dealt with in my life—and one of the best human beings I’ve ever met,” Dan said.
The Results
Less than a year into the business, Dan’s Universal City, Texas Tint World franchise is nearly breaking even—a feat for any new business. He loves what he’s doing, has reinvented his life, and is even eyeing a second Tint World franchise. First Bank of the Lake helped him turn his dreams into reality, guiding him through the challenges with grace and professionalism.
Would Dan recommend First Bank of the Lake to others? “Heck yes, I would recommend them. The bank is a 10 out of 10, and my banker, Jodie Bowman, is an 11.”
From a man who lost everything to one who found a new passion and a fresh start, Dan Billings’ story is one of resilience, hope, and the right bank at the right time.
